Saks Fifth Avenue, along with other fine retailers like Bloomingdale's — have recently eliminated or drastically scaled back their petite departments, infuriating many longtime customers (New York Times, 2006).
Executives at these department stores said the decision was based on the poor sales of petite sizes, which are traditionally designed for a woman 5-foot-4 or smaller, with pant lengths and jacket proportions cut accordingly. Petite women, they said, would rather wear the more youthful, skin-baring and tighter-fitting clothing in the contemporary departments, even if it does not fit them as well. And, they point out, there is always tailoring.
You can find only Petite Jeans at Saks.
Even though Saks Fifth Avenue offers a petite category (buried under Maternity and Other) on their website, the selection is limited to a dozen petite jeans from brands like 7 for all mankind, Joe's Jeans, Paige, Citizens of Humanity, J Brand
Not so easy to shop by size
While petites may often find a good fit among regular sized clothes in sizes like XS, Saks makes it hard without having tools on the site to filter categories like dresses and jackets by a specific size.
Hopefully Saks will be improving their site and selection to make shopping a better experience for the petite women, who represent the majority of women shoppers!
