The first Talbots stores was opened in Hingham, Massachusetts in 1947.  The store specialized in women's clothing, shoes and accessories and within the first year they established a direct mail service with their first famous catalog.  In 1973, Talbots was acquired by General Mills.  As of 1993, Talbots was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.  Today there are over 1,080 Talbots stores located in the United States, UK and Canada along with 4 stores in Japan.  The Talbots corporate headquarters remains in Hingham, Massachusetts with a product development office in New York City, a computer center in Florida, a call center in Tennessee and a distribution center in Lakeville, Massachusetts.  In 2006, Talbots acquired the women's clothing retailer J. Jill.  Talbots is known for their liberal guarantee that allows merchandise to be returned any time and for any reason.  Today Talbots caters to women in the 35+ category who are looking for distinctive, complementary styles in a wide range of sizes.
